UNIT 7.2.
REFLEXICON (PhD)

AIMS

This unit aims to:

  • introduce you to a design game with three modes of activity
  • encourage you to look more closely at your own work and its practices
  • reflect on how your work uses and may also query how futures design words work
  • connect critical reflection and reflexive review as part of your design research practice

MATERIALS

TIME

Upto 30 mins per game mode

1. INTRODUCTION

As part of the Lexicon a card game was developed to connect words to action and to the purposes of design-research.

The REFLEXICON reuses card game-based codes to help explorations with the content or words of Lexicon in a reflexive way. This is important in reflecting and writing design research.

We were also interested in creating an activity and tool to use the terms of the Lexicon to assist you to reflect on your practice, design and research project. The aim of this is to question that practice. Evaluating and assessing the place of the Lexicon terms in your work and practice and environment were also important. These aspects are realised in the different Game modes of the game.

2. REFLEXICON – OBJECTIVE OF THE GAME

With its three game modes, the REFLEXICON invites designers and designer-researchers to understand how the terms from the Design Futures Lexicon already interact with their practice and how they can strengthen their project work through future-proofing.

As the name suggests, playing the REFLEXICON is itself is a reflexive activity: doing so won’t produce results and ideas for a project. This is really about thinking in a deeper way about the practice of design or the work currently underway or planned and how to think reflexively about the nature of design research.

3. RULES

The three game modes allow you to reflect on how the Design Futures Lexicon relates to your own design practice. Each game mode is based on a specific combination of cards formulating a reflexive hint. Players are invited to iterate on their responses and reflections by experimenting with new hints. In addition, REFLEXICON cards and rules are kept open enough to allow players to adapt the game experience to their work or to make  and merge new uses of this playful tool.
